About myfi planner

Built by someone on the journey.
For everyone else on theirs.

myfi planner is a privacy-focused FIRE planning tool, no AI training, no bank logins, no data sharing. Track your income and expenses, project your path to financial independence, and monitor your net worth, all in one place. Designed to evolve with you at every stage of your journey.

Why this exists

I'd been wanting to turn my spreadsheets into an app for a long time, well before I even hit my FIRE number. Juggling overly complicated formulas across multiple sheets was one thing, but I also realised that my concerns after reaching FIRE were completely different from when I was building toward FIRE. It turns out different phases of the journey have different needs, even when the numbers are the same.

Turning the spreadsheet into a web app opened up a lot more room to build richer features for each phase of FI. The features grew from my own experience, from tried and true methods in accumulation, to post-FI tools as I navigate the withdrawal phase and its very different needs. Having a proper platform means I can finally bring the whole journey together in one place.

But the vision was always bigger than just the tools. I also wanted a place to share the journey itself, through writing about FIRE, simple living, and the things I've learned along the way, as well as simple, healthy, budget-friendly recipes I want to share. Most importantly, I wanted the writing and the tools to be connected; guides where you can interact with the actual calculators, widgets and projections inline, not just read about them. I couldn't find a single platform that could support interactive content alongside personal writing. So I built one.

How it came to be

myfi planner didn't appear overnight. It's the result of several years of iteration, failed experiments, and lessons learned from using the wrong tool/platform before building the right one.

2022
Frugal Manual

A WordPress blog to document the FIRE journey, share money saving tips. The legacy PHP stack was too bloated and made building custom financial tools impractical.

2023
Ghost Platform

Switched to Ghost, a modern Node.js blogging platform. Cleaner and faster, but still not the right platform for the hybrid tools & blog vision I had in mind.

2024
Simply Freely

First attempt at building the vision from scratch. More of a prototype than product, but it proved the idea was the right approach for my needs.

2026
myfi planner

Built from the ground up with scalability and maintainability as first principles. Everything learned from the previous iterations went into this.

The values behind myfi planner

Your financial data is yours

Financial data is some of the most personal data you have, and companies have been quietly monetising it for years. Every feature in myfi planner is thoroughly thought through with privacy as a first principle, not an afterthought. Your data stays on your device, with no third-party sharing and no selling your data to anyone. Ever.

Purpose before profit

While I hope this project becomes an income stream for me someday, that is not the only reason it got built. I genuinely want to help people understand their finances and feel in control of their future. The product always comes before the business model. The core experience will always be free and genuinely useful, with everything I used to track my way towards my financial independence.

Sustainable by design

The same philosophy I apply to my life, fitness and finances applies here: no shortcuts, no hacks. Every decision is made with the long term in mind, this isn't an AI-generated app thrown together overnight. It's built and maintained by one person, which means it's not perfect, but is intentional.
